(PatriotPostNews.com) – While American citizens and political leaders continue to draw attention to the illegal immigrants pouring into the nation, Republican Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas has said that the sitting president is “failing” to address the border crisis.
Abbott has been forced to deal with thousands of people streaming into the United States through the southern border illegally. In a February 4 interview on “Sunday Morning Futures,” Abbott praised former president Donald Trump for his efforts to secure America’s border while criticizing the current commander-in-chief, Joe Biden, for his lackluster response.
The Texas governor pointed out that, as proven by Trump’s action to address illegal immigration, there is no need for the president to wait for Congress to take initiative about migration issues. Abbott also said that the president has “an obligation” through federal law to “deny illegal entry” to all immigrants trying to enter the country illegally.
Should illegal immigrants manage to get into the nation, Abbott said the president then has “a legal obligation to detain” them. However, he argued during the interview that Biden “is failing at both” of these obligations. The governor cited this failure as what “gives Texas the authority” to take matters into their own hands by “protect[ing] our state through self-defense.”
Tensions continue to rise amid an ongoing court case between the Biden administration and the state of Texas, under Abbott’s leadership. Texas has previously installed razor wire and implemented floating barriers in an effort to keep the southern border free of illegal immigrants.
But Abbott is not the only Republican leader to side with Texas on the border crisis. According to the governor of the Lone Star State, “more than half” of his fellow governors have come together to stand by what he described as “a very important proposition,” which is a “guaranteed” right to self-defense “if states face imminent harm or invasion.”
Recently, presidential candidate Nikki Haley expressed support for Abbott in his legal battle with the Biden administration.
