Armed Drone Shot Down above Base Housing US Troops

(PatriotPostNews.com) – A military-equipped drone was shot down near an airport in Iraq, which is where some American military members are stationed.

On January 2, the Kurdistan Counter Terrorism—a security agency within the Kurdistan region of Iraq—announced that an armed drone was taken out that morning. It was shot down over Erbil airport and was reportedly sent by “illegal militia,” according to sources.

At the time of the statement’s release by the Kurdistan Counter Terrorism, it remained to be seen whether the attempted sabotage had resulted in casualties or damage. The drone’s failed attempt came days after another drone was shot down by air defense systems on the evening of December 31. The first incident also took place over Erbil airport.

Responsibility for the first attack was claimed by the self-proclaimed “Islamic Resistance in Iraq.” Unrest for international forces who are based in Iraq have risen since the beginning of the war in the Middle East, which was sparked by the terrorist group Hamas launching a surprise attack against Israel.

In the aftermath of the massacre in Israeli towns, thousands of civilians have died, and hundreds detained as prisoners or taken as hostages while Israel and Palestine engage in ongoing combat. The United States, a long-time ally of Israel, has experienced many incidents of attacks against their bases in Syria. Bases for other countries have also been targeted in the Middle East.

United States defense officials have shared that American troops stationed in Iraq and Syria have been attacked more than a hundred times since October 17. This number does not include attacks on American warships that are at sea, only targeted incidents against bases on land.

In November 2023, three weaponized drones were taken out over Erbil airport during two distinct attacks. A nearby military base successfully prevented the drones from reaching their target, and the United States Department of Defense confirmed that there was no subsequent damage or casualties.
