(PatriotPostNews.com) – Amid the ongoing border crisis in the United States, the capital city of Colorado has been overrun with tens of thousands of immigrants.
The more than 700,000 residents in Denver were joined by over 40,000 immigrants as a destination for migrants who have flooded into southern border states like Texas. Denver is one of the cities to which the Lone Star State has transported thousands of people in a blunt statement that there are too many entering the United States.
Now, state officials in Denver have started implementing limits on how long immigrants are allowed to stay in rooms and accommodations provided by the state in order to keep up with the large number of people showing up each day.
Denver Health chief of government and community affairs, Dr. Steven Federico, explained that the city has been forced to ask for help from government agencies at the state and federal level. The pediatrician described the response as “an unheeded call” as the bulk of the responsibility remains “on safety net hospitals” including Denver Health.
However, these medical facilities are quickly running out of staff and resources, many of which are being used to tend to patients who are unable to pay for the state’s healthcare. Additionally, the city is struggling to provide housing for the increasing number of residents.
The housing crisis has led to the development of so-called “tent cities” throughout Denver. One business owner detailed that there were more than 200 tents around her bar, leading to a fast “decline” in customers after “the first three months.”
Mike Johnston, the city’s mayor, has estimated that Denver will use up to ten percent of the city’s budget to accommodate the ongoing crisis as well as needing another $100 million to support housing, schools and hospitals with the influx of migrants coming from Texas.
Johnston said in an interview that immigrants who come to Denver with a work authorization—enabling them to “support themselves immediately”—the crisis would be lessened due to limited dependence on state and federal funds.
