(PatriotPostNews.com) – A Republican Congressman recently released a statement that appeared to support the idea of attacking Gaza with nuclear weapons amid the controversial war between Israel and Hamas.
Michigan Rep. Tim Walberg made the comments during a town hall meeting addressing the ongoing conflict between the two long-time enemies, which began after the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas slaughtered more than a thousand innocent people in a surprise attack on Israeli towns in October 2023.
A widely circulated clip of the recent meeting features Walberg saying that the crisis in the Middle East should not garner more humanitarian aid from the United States but should instead “be like Nagasaki and Hiroshima,” referring to America’s use of two atomic bombs on the Japanese cities to end World War II—the only time nuclear weapons have been used in armed conflict.
The lawmaker added that the Israel-Hamas war should be responded to in such a way that America can “get it over quick.” His remarks come as the International Court of Justice (ICJ) continues to deliberate whether the Jewish state is engaging in genocide with its persistent attacks on the Gaza Strip, which have killed and displaced thousands of innocent civilians. Genocide charges were brought against Israel by South Africa.
The comments have increased tension between American lawmakers, who have been divided on how to respond to the tragic war in the Middle East. Although the White House has remained loyal to its long-time ally, Israel, it has worked to provide aid to those in Gaza and supported discussions to put an end to the fighting.
Following the backlash, Walberg issued a statement insisting that his comments were presented in a skewed light. He wrote that the use of nuclear weapons is “the last thing” he would “advocate for,” saying that his comments were “a metaphor” intended to emphasize the necessity for Israel “to win” quickly without endangering American lives.
Walberg added that his suggestion of using nuclear weapons stands by his support of fewer innocents dying compared to those getting “caught in the crossfire” of the ongoing war.
