(PatriotPostNews.com) – Democrats are divided on Justice Sonia Sotomayor’s retirement. A faction of Democrats are calling for Sotomayor to strategically retire while Democrats still hold the White House and the Senate, while others oppose the move and praise her fitness for the role. Some progressive Democrats have also expressed that it could be a disservice to Sotomayor’s legacy as the first Latina Supreme Court Justice for her to step down before she needs to.
The calls for Sotomayor’s retirement are for the most part, restricted to activists and political commentators, as more mainstream Democrats are content to allow her to remain on the bench. However, there is a growing concern that a more conservative justice could replace Sotomayor if she does not retire before the upcoming presidential election.
Attention has been brought to Sotomayor’s health. Sotomayor is 69 years old and has type-1 diabetes. In 2018, she reportedly required the aid of a medic while traveling. Health records from the Marshals Service revealed that Sotomayor had a low blood sugar episode in January of 2018 while at home. Then, a month later, she required the aid of a medic while traveling from Colorado to Florida.
Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren spoke highly of Justice Sotomayor and encouraged her to continue her work for years to come. Democratic Senator Pete Welch echoed similar praise for Justice Sotomayor.
Senator Richard Blumenthal praised Justice Sotomayor’s skill and accomplishments but suggested that the Democrats may need to reflect on lessons learned after the passing of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Blumenthal emphasized that he believes Sotomayor is currently fully able to do the job.
Mehdi Hassan, former Host for MSNBC, urges Justice Sotomayor to step down. Hassan detailed feeling traumatized after Roe v. Wade was overturned and vented his concerns about another Republican-nominated Supreme Court justice.
Despite concerns over Sotomayor’s health, the Justice has continued to make public appearances as well as remain active in oral arguments.
