(PatriotPostNews.com) – Kim Jong Un, the leader of North Korea, recently launched a nuclear drill to test his military’s ability to ward off a ballistic attack.
The state-run media outlet Korean Central News Agency reported on Tuesday, April 23, that the event was the first test of the country’s “Nuclear Trigger” system, which is designed to counteract nuclear attacks. The drill was initiated one day after South Korea caught wind of multiple short-range ballistic missiles in its region.
During the exercise, large rocket launchers decked with nuclear missiles were fired from artillery units, striking a sea target nearly 230 miles away. Images from the Korean Central News Agency reveal that at least four of these rockets were launched during the drill. According to Kim, the military equipment proved to be on point, and he compared it to a “sniper’s rifle.”
The nation’s leader also said the exercise was “important” for the military to “thoroughly prepare” for the possibility of “deterring a war” and being equipped for “taking the initiative” in an armed conflict whenever it is required.
The drill announcement came one day after South Korea’s military revealed it had tracked multiple ballistic missiles that flew slightly less than 200 miles before striking the ocean somewhere between Japan and Korea.
But the missile launch was not the first of its kind to be tested by North Korea. Days before, the state said it engaged in a drill firing of a “super-large warhead” as well as an anti-aircraft missile. Previously, North Korea tested a hypersonic warhead of intermediate range and solid fuel.
On April 23, after the latest drill was detected in the South, Lee Sun-jun of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said the North “exaggerated” the extent of its nuclear counterattack abilities. He added that there are plenty of details in the claims that do not add up, including the fact that North Korea has yet to finish testing a “small tactical nuclear weapon.”
