(PatriotPostNews.com) – In the latest installment of the election interference case against Donald Trump, a GOP lawmaker has accused the leading prosecutor of leading a “witch hunt” against the former president.
On March 6, Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida filed a complaint against Jack Smith, special counsel, accusing the attorney of bringing the case against Trump as “a partisan exercise” instead of being motivated by dealing justice for wrongdoing.
A press release from the lawmaker’s office announced that Gaetz has requested Inspector General Michael Horowitz of the Department of Justice (DOJ) “to investigate the election interference” case brought against Trump by Smith. The lawsuit alleges that the former president and some of his allies engaged in tampering with election results in Georgia during the 2020 presidential election.
Gaetz argues, however, that Smith’s efforts “to expedite” the case are motivated solely by the hope to “ensure a trial” is held before the presidential election in November 2024. The complaint specifies that these actions and intentions break rules laid out by the DOJ as well as federal law.
Gaetz described Smith’s case against Trump—which is backed by United States Attorney General Merrick Garland—as a “witch hunt” and “partisan exercise.” He called on Horowitz to “assess” the counsel’s “compliance” with DOJ policies and federal laws.
He urged the inspector general’s “immediate attention” to the actions of Smith, emphasizing suspicion that the attorney is breaking rules “related to investigatory and prosecutorial” pursuits within an election season.
The Justice Manual specifies that law enforcement agencies are not permitted to “select the timing” to bring legal charges against politicians with the intention of harming their campaigns.
Trump, facing four criminal charges related to interference with the 2020 presidential election results, has pleaded not guilty. His primary argument—that he has immunity from the charges due to his role as president at the time of the alleged crimes—was taken up by the federal Supreme Court at the end of February. The nation’s highest court will begin hearing arguments on April 25.
