(PatriotPostNews.org) – The migrant issue at the southern border is causing an increasing amount of outrage in Brooklyn.
According to reports, migrants housed at a shelter in the Marine Park area who were bused in from Texas are pleading with passers-by for donations of food, clothing, and money. They can be seen openly begging on street corners. But now, many say, it’s gone a bit too far.
“Our group of neighbors was kind and supportive,” the 62-year-old resident of Marina Park, David Fitzgerald, told reporters. “Now,” he says, “there is an invasion of individuals banging on doors begging, asking for money.”
As of the last week of November, 66,000 migrants were housed in shelters around New York City.
Residents of the Marina Park neighborhood, who supported Trump for president in 2016 and again in 2020, are discussing the migrants in a Facebook group named “STOP FLOYD BENNETT ILLEGAL MIGRANTS,” which alludes to the site of the shelter.
On an abandoned federal airport are four enormous tents that comprise the Floyd Bennett Field shelter, hosting around 1,700 migrant families. Buses have transported migrants to various locations in Queens and Brooklyn, including schools.
“The optics are horrendous,” said Curtis Sliwa, a former Republican mayoral candidate who has spoken out against the shelters along with his neighbors and warned of potential demonstrations at Floyd Bennett if migrants started living there.
This past week, supporters and members of migrant families staged a demonstration outside of New York City Hall, urging Mayor Eric Adams to halt his proposal to restrict the amount of time that newly arrived immigrants may spend in shelters operated by the city.
To address the immigration situation, Adams has made ten trips to Washington, D.C., to request government assistance.
David Fitzgerald, 62, an Irish immigrant living in Marine Park for twenty years, is among the enraged. He said that in the previous three weeks, he received many knocks on his door by people begging for handouts.
Even the most compassionate, at some point, will lose their patience.
