(PatriotPostNews.com) – A top official with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) recently issued a warning that ongoing conflicts around the world could lead to a larger, full-scale war.
Admiral Rob Bauer, a member of the Royal Netherlands Navy and chair of the NATO Military Committee, said on January 18 that a war could be in the cards during the next 20 years, citing the current conflict taking place between Russia and Ukraine.
Bauer said during last week’s press conference that things will not necessarily go “wrong tomorrow” but emphasized the need to “realize” the world is not inherently “in peace,” either. The admiral stated that this was the motivation for the Netherlands “preparing for conflict” against Russia as well as “terror groups” should the tensions “come to it.”
However, Bauer also pointed out that NATO is not seeking out armed conflict or intending to start a larger war. His comments merely emphasized that they “have to be ready” should Russia “attack us.”
The conflict in Eastern Europe escalated nearly two years ago in February 2022, when Russia invaded Ukraine. The two nations have been at war ever since.
Bauer’s warning comes after NATO announced plans to initiate major military exercises with 31 different member states—as well as Sweden, a candidate for joining the alliance—which is set to take place next week. The drills are scheduled to run until May 2024 and will include multiple aircrafts, ships, vehicles and 90,000 soldiers. As the most extensive military exercise since the Cold War, the drills will take place throughout Europe.
Upon the announcement, leaders within the multi-national alliance explained that the drills are important acts of preparation for potential armed conflict despite NATO’s historically defensive stance on military issues.
In addition to concerns that the war in Ukraine will extend throughout the globe, the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip—and the United States allies working to protect international trade and maintain peace from Iranian-backed threats—also suggests potential global conflict.
