(PatriotPostNews.com) – In the latest installment of the ongoing legal battles faced by former president and leading GOP candidate Donald Trump, prosecutors have argued that Trump attempted to convince his lawyer to hide classified documents.
According to the most recent court filing in the ongoing Florida case alleging that Trump mishandled classified documents after leaving the White House, the former president told two personal assistants to conceal documents from the attorney—who refused to engage in the corruption—and hide video evidence.
The new allegations came to light on February 26, filed for Jack Smith (special counsel), his assistant David Harbach II, and his counselor Jay Bratt. The filing came as a response to a motion filed by Trump’s legal team with Judge Aileen Cannon. Trump’s lawyers have been arguing that the case was launched against the former president as an act of “vindictive prosecution” put on by the Democratic Party and president.
According to the most recent court filings, however, Trump saw to the concealment of classified documents himself. This allegation seeks to prove that the case is not based on political gain or competition but is instead a necessary trial to hold the former president accountable for misconduct.
The recent filing argues that Trump did not properly respond to a request from the National Archive that he return documents he had previously stored at his Florida estate, Mar-a-Lago. The request came after Trump left his position as commander-in-chief in 2021.
Prosecutors stated that Trump tried to “enlist his own attorney” to lie to the grand jury and the FBI by saying that the former president did not have any classified documents in his possession. He is also accused of telling the lawyer to conceal or destroy the material. The filing adds that Trump tried to deceive the attorney when he refused to lie.
The former president has been charged with 40 federal offenses related to mishandling classified documents after his presidency and lying to authorities.
