(PatriotPostNews.com) – Major division among Republicans in the House of Representatives persists, with the most recent development in the drama being accusations towards certain lawmakers for inhibiting progress in border security measures.
The tension heightened over the weekend as the congressional chamber managed to pass foreign aid bills that gave billions of dollars to allies, including Israel, Ukraine, and Taiwan. Prior to their approval, House Republicans had suggested the possibility of reaching an agreement with Democrats to gain some footing with border security measures. However, this proposal was blocked by the GOP and never reached a vote in the House.
Several Republicans in the chamber scrutinized the contradicting efforts of their fellow lawmakers to Axios. Kentucky Rep. Andy Barr told the outlet that any “true conservative” would have “advance[d] border security,” but that many Republicans have instead worked against that initiative.
Another congressmember said that Republicans who “scream the loudest” about the necessity of border security measures were the most influential in “preventing” its progression. A third lawmaker described House Republicans as “unwilling to compromise,” deepening the divide in Congress and pushing the GOP to “make bigger concessions” with Democrats.
Missouri Rep. Eric Burlison has also publicly criticized the GOP for prioritizing the security of Ukraine’s border instead of solving the ongoing problems at the American border.
The rising tensions come amid calls for House Speaker Mike Johnson of Louisiana to resign, a move that has been primarily led by Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene—who has attracted criticism from her colleagues for preventing successful border security measures. She has called on Johnson to “do the right thing” or else “be vacated.”
But Johnson—who assumed the Speakership in October 2023 after former California Rep. Kevin McCarthy was ousted—has insisted that he will not resign despite the turmoil in the House and within his own party.
