(PatriotPostNews.com) – The American Independent Party of California (AIP) has nominated Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for president. The California Secretary of State is expected to certify Kennedy’s candidacy this August. Kennedy’s campaign confirmed the nomination shortly after AIP’s announcement. Kennedy is utilizing every tool available to stay in the race.
Independent candidates have two options to get on the ballot for a given state. The candidate can either collect signatures to gain a spot on the ballot or they can be nominated by a third party and be given the party’s line. Some states, like California, can require up to 200,000 signatures to be officially listed on the ballot. The AIP is not the only obscure third party Kennedy has partnered with. To gain access to the Michigan ballot, Kennedy partnered with a nearly defunct political party known as The Natural Party.
The Natural Law party was a national party founded in the early 1990s and disbanded in 2004, though a couple states still maintain chapters. The original party was founded by a prominent yogi who was inspired by transcendental meditation.
The American Independent Party has a longer, more controversial history. Founded in 1967, the party nominated known segregationists such as George Wallace and Lester Maddox. In 2016, the AIP nominated former President Donald Trump. The Trump campaign quickly disavowed the nomination. The AIP says it is a home for “refugees” fleeing the Republican Party as well as the Democratic party. The group describes itself as pro-second-amendment, against illegal immigration, and a firm supporter of the 10th Amendment.
Kennedy released a five-minute-long video explaining why he accepted the controversial party’s nomination. Kenny asserted that the AIP has reformed and is no longer the nefarious party it once was. Kennedy pushed back against the party’s messy history, saying that previous nominees like George Wallace were “antithetical” to everything his father stood for. Kennedy vowed to use the AIP’s ballot line for the greater good.
