Russia Creates Air Defense Around Putin’s Hometown

(PatriotPostNews.com) – Following recent attacks from drones, the Russian military is setting up an air defense around St. Petersburg, the hometown of President Vladimir Putin.

The defensive move comes after attacks were launched in the region of Leningrad. ASTRA, an independent Russian news agency operated via Telegram, published a clip on January 23 lasting 36 seconds which shows the plan in motion. The video includes negative comments about the S-300 defense systems that were being set up in the region.

The man in the video can be heard lamenting that the military is “preparing for the worst,” as evidenced by the air defense precautions. He caught on camera a glimpse of the of the missiles, including one that was inhibiting his ability to drive on a road. Newsweek reached out to the country’s Defense Ministry on January 23 for comment and verification on the development.

The clip was released as amid concerns and speculation that limited defense systems in the area are falling short. Amid the ongoing war with Ukraine, President Putin has called for much of the nation’s military resources to be put towards defending his Lake Valdai residence.

Ukraine’s military launched an attack on January 18 at an oil terminal in St. Petersburg, which marked the first drone attack which targeted the Leningrad region in the war. The ongoing armed conflict began in February 2022, when the Russian military launched an attack in Eastern Ukraine.

During the January 18 attack, one of the drones went over the president’s Lake Valdai palace. An additional attack took place on January 21 near St. Petersburg, hitting a gas export terminal. The second strike was claimed as the responsibility of the Security Service of Ukraine’s military.

According to an internal source from Russian security agencies, the recent attacks in the region are the result of “acute shortages” in resources needed to monitor air targets as well as equipment needed to shoot down threats.
