(PatriotPostNews.com) – If former President Trump were ever incarcerated, the Secret Service would be required by law to protect him 24 hours a day, even while behind bars. Protecting an imprisoned, aging former president would present unprecedented hurdles. Some doubt if it could even be logistically possible given the complex safety requirements. The safety of former US presidents is so crucial that current and former US presidents are prohibited from driving a vehicle on public roads. A president getting involved in even a routine fender-bender could result in, at best, headaches for the Secret Service, at worst, a presidential car accident could spark an international incident. President Barack Obama stated that his “big joyride” was just a few laps around the presidential driveway.
Democrats are seeking to remove the complication altogether by stripping the former president of his Secret Service protection. Democratic lawmakers have pushed forward a bill that would remove Secret Service protection from convicted felons if they are ordered to spend at least one year in prison. The bill, spearheaded by the former chair of the disbanded January 6 committee, Democratic Representative Nennie Thompson of Mississippi, would remove secret service protections instantly for those convicted of a state or federal felony.
The bill has been given the name “Denying Infinite Security and Government Resources Allocated toward Convicted and Extremely Dishonorable (DISGRACED) Former Protectees Act.”
While it may be theoretically possible for the former president to serve prison time, it is far more likely that if he is convicted, he will be subjected to some form of house arrest. If convicted on all counts in his current “hush money” trial, Trump could face upwards of a decade in prison. As of now, Trump is 77 years old. If incarcerated, that would make him nearly 90 years old upon release. Legal experts anticipate that in the unlikely event of a Trump conviction, Trump would at most face four years of house arrest.
