(PatriotPostNews.com) – The mastermind behind the iconic documentary “Super Size Me” died at age 53 due to cancer complications.
Morgan Spurlock came up with the concept for the film when he learned that two women alleged that McDonald’s was misrepresenting its nutritional information. The women suggested that the calorie content be reduced. In response to the claim, a McDonald’s spokesperson asserted that McDonald’s food was “healthy” and “nutritious.” Spurlock decided he wanted to test this claim by eating nothing but McDonald’s meals for a month.
The film saw nearly $23 million in ticket sales, and Spurlock went on to create additional documentaries.
Spurlock upped the ante by agreeing to supersize his meal or get the largest portions whenever asked. Spurlock’s health quickly diminished. By the end of the month, he was 25 pounds heavier and had developed liver problems and psychological issues. Sometime after the film’s release, it was revealed that Spurlock had struggled with alcoholism. Spurlock admitted to drinking throughout the filming of the documentary.
The fast food industry faced significant backlash after the film’s release, but it quickly recovered. Today, fast food chains are seeing a different kind of backlash. As the economy continues to struggle, people are now describing fast food as a “luxury item.” Fast food prices have nearly doubled across all brands. McDonald’s Big Mac was just under $4 in 2019 and is now over $8. A Chipotle chicken burrito that was six dollars in 2019, is now over ten dollars. McDonald’s prices have risen over 60% from 2014, Burger King by almost 80 percent, and Carl’s Jr. by over 120%.
The film was incredibly successful and remains renowned for its aggressive style and criticism of the fast food industry. Despite Spurlock’s later controversies, “Super Size Me” is part of pop culture.
