(PatriotPostNews.com) – Two denials in high-profile cases were dealt by the United States Supreme Court this week.
On Monday April 29, the nation’s highest court rejected a request from former trade advisor to Donald Trump, Peter Navarro, to be released from jail pending his appeal of convictions for contempt of Congress. Additionally, the court refused to hear the First Amendment case brought against the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) by Elon Musk.
74-year-old Navarro is set to be released on July 17 from FCI Miami, according to records from the Bureau of Prison. He made a similar request of Chief Justice John Roberts earlier but was denied. His most recent effort to be released pending appeal—this time asked of Justice Neil Gorsuch—was similarly rejected.
Navarro became the first former White House official to be convicted of contempt of Congress charges earlier this year. He was sentenced to four months in jail for refusing to comply with subpoena orders from the House Select Committee during its probe into the events that took place outside the Capitol building on January 6, 2021.
The billionaire entrepreneur and owner of the social media platform X was also denied a request by the Supreme Court this week. The case stems from a 2018 lawsuit filed by the SEC against Musk, arguing that he had “misled investors” with a post on X—which was still Twitter at the time, prior to the entrepreneur’s purchase of it—about his company’s stock prices.
Musk agreed to pay $20 million in a settlement that also required an attorney for Tesla to review all Tweets about the company posted by its owner. Tesla itself also paid substantial fines and Musk stepped down as its chairman. However, in 2022, Musk’s attorneys appealed the settlement—particularly the “Twitter sitter” stipulation that they argued was a violation of Musk’s First Amendment right to free speech.
The Supreme Court’s rejection on Monday was a refusal without comment to hear the case.
