(PatriotPostNews.com) – Republican lawmakers are pushing legislation to prevent illegal immigrants from voting in US elections, arguing that protecting election integrity was crucial, especially in the wake of the unprecedented influx of illegals at the border since President Biden took office.
Congressional Republicans have proposed the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, which would require individuals to provide proof of citizenship to register to vote in US elections.
The SAVE Act, which was introduced by Utah Republican Senator Mike Lee and Texas Republican Rep. Chip Roy earlier this month, would amend the National Voter Registration Act to require proof of citizenship and would mandate that each state set up an alternative process to verify citizenship for those without standard documents.
The bill would also require states to purge non-citizens from their voter rolls and would impose federal penalties on individuals who intentionally allow non-citizens to register to vote.
Senator Lee said permitting foreign nationals to vote in US elections was “a grave blow to our security and self-governance.”
Rep. Roy accused “radical progressive Democrats” of using the Biden administration’s open borders policies to “fundamentally remake America.” He insisted that securing US elections should be “a key cornerstone for any representative government,” since without secure elections, “we won’t have a country.”
Louisiana Senator John Kennedy, a co-sponsor of the SAVE Act, said the bill would ensure that non-citizens could not “cancel out” the voices of American citizens “at the ballot box.”
Meanwhile, the November ballots in six Republican-controlled states will include non-citizen voting measures, while another two states are considering similar ballot initiatives.
Democrat lawmakers blasted Republicans for proposing the SAVE Act, calling non-citizen voting a “nonissue” and claiming that Republicans were using the legislation to lay the groundwork for Donald Trump to challenge the November election results.
During his weekly press conference last week, Speaker Mike Johnson suggested that it was “intuitively” known that non-citizens were voting in federal elections.
