(PatriotPostNews.com) – Kentucky authorities said that Scottie Scheffler, who is the best golf player in the world, was detained on May 17 in the morning hours by police officers in Louisville after he dragged a cop with his vehicle outside the PGA Championship. A video of the incident posted by ESPN reporter Jeff Darlington on his Twitter account shows policemen leading Scheffler away. At one moment, he can be seen turning to the reporter and asking if he could “help me.”
During an interview with NBC News right after the arrest, the golfer’s lawyer, Steve Romines, said that his client’s arrest was nothing more than a misunderstanding and that both of them would “litigate the case.” He also explained what happened was that some police officers who were managing a fatal accident failed to communicate with those who were directing traffic for the golf tournament. The lawyer added that when Scheffler followed directions to get to the event, another policeman who was unaware of the directions had an issue with the golfer and eventually arrested him.
The situation took place right before the PGA Championship’s second round at the Valhalla Golf Club. Many sporting journalists explained that while the competition was going to be an interesting challenge for Scheffler, he was the favorite to win it as he’s currently in the best moment of his career.
In a statement, the Kentucky police said the golfer suddenly moved into the westbound lane to avoid the traffic jam while he was driving in the eastbound lane. The department detailed that a police officer who was directing traffic because of the fatal accident saw the move and stopped the golfer to give him instructions. However, the police said that the golfer “refused to comply” and tried to move forward with the vehicle, hitting the policeman and dragging him to the ground, causing him some minor injuries.
Jail records revealed that the golfer was booked on charges of reckless driving, criminal mischief, assault of a police officer, and ignoring instructions from traffic-directing officers. He was released a couple of hours later.
