The agency stated the virus appears to be part of a chain of events that leads to most multiple sclerosis cases. Separate researchers at Stanford Medicine found antibodies in 20 to 25 percent of MS patients that attack both a viral protein and a protein in the brain, offering a possible reason why the infection triggers the disease.
Nature Reviews Neurology, a leading medical journal, went further, calling the Science study’s data “robust evidence” that the virus can directly cause multiple sclerosis. That kind of direct language is rare in disease research, where scientists usually stick to describing associations rather than outright causes.
Cancer Agencies List Specific Diseases as Confirmed
The International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified Epstein-Barr virus as a confirmed cause of cancer in humans. Its formal review lists sufficient evidence connecting the virus to Burkitt’s lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease, nasopharyngeal carcinoma, and other cancers tied to weakened immune systems. The U.S. National Toxicology Program separately concluded there is sufficient evidence the virus causes six types of cancer.
A 2025 study highlighted by the same cancer agency found that people who tested positive for a specific viral antibody faced higher risk of several cancers, including lung cancer, liver cancer, and lymphoma. That finding pushed the conversation beyond the cancers already on the confirmed list and toward a broader pattern of risk across the body.
New Genetic Data Points Toward Autoimmune Diseases
A 2026 study published in Nature used large-scale genetic sequencing to examine what drives persistent viral activity in the body. Researchers found the virus shares genetic architecture with autoimmune diseases including rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and type 1 diabetes. This adds to a body of secondary research suggesting the virus alters immune system behavior in ways that could set off disease in people already prone to it.

Because the virus infects nearly everyone at some point in life, separating true cause from coincidence takes careful, large-scale research. Most people carry the virus without ever developing MS, cancer, or an autoimmune disease, which means other factors likely combine with infection to trigger illness in a smaller group of people. That complexity is why researchers describe the virus as a major piece of the puzzle rather than the sole cause of every disease connected to it.
