(PatriotPostNews.com) — Since the failed assassination attempt against Donald Trump, lawmakers on both sides of the political aisle are taking a closer look at what led to the shooting.
Florida Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, a Republican, said after a House Oversight Committee meeting that Thomas Matthew Crooks—the young man who fired the shots towards Trump—was “not working alone.” She made the remarks via X, saying she is “convinced” that the shooting was not a solo act.
Crooks shot at the leading presidential candidate during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13, narrowly missing Trump’s head as a bullet grazed his ear. Additional shots injured two attendees and fatally struck one man, who was shielding his family from the bullets. Crooks was shot dead by members of the Secret Service.
In its ongoing investigation into how the incident took place, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has obtained the shooter’s phone but remains challenged as they try to access his encrypted device. The federal agency also uncovered a second phone as well as more explosive devices and firearms at the shooter’s home.
One of the most controversial discussions being had in the aftermath of the assassination attempt is whether the Secret Service acted negligently, opening the door for Crooks to make his move. Internal whistleblowers have testified that the agency was understaffed at the rally and that most of the former president’s security detail were less experienced agents from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), rather than highly-trained Secret Service members.
Kimberly Cheatle, the law enforcement agency’s director, controversially said that her agents were unable to position themselves on the building where Crooks stood to shoot because of safety risks and a “sloped roof.” Local law enforcement has claimed that they warned the federal agents about spotting Crooks at least 30 minutes before he began shooting.
