The World Friendship Games, a brainchild of Russian President Vladimir Putin, aimed to provide an alternative to Western-dominated sports events like the Olympics. Conceived to showcase Russia’s capabilities, the Games have now been indefinitely postponed, officially until a “special decision” by the Russian president is made. The International Friendship Association (IFA) has officially set 2025 as a more suitable year for the Games. The postponement attributed to insufficient recovery time for athletes following major tournaments in summer 2024 aligns with the goal of fostering broader athlete participation. Applications were received from nearly 2,500 athletes across 127 countries. With the events slated at 21 venues in Moscow and Yekaterinburg, the Games’ rescheduling facilitates comprehensive cultural and entertainment components. Jerome Valcke, the secretary general of the International Friendship Association, said of the games: “The postponement is logical. Why have the Games this year, which is in terms of a multi-sport event focused on Paris 2024? I always thought that 24 was not the correct year to have them and definitely 2025 is much better.”

Valcke noted that the games are designed as apolitical, dismissing speculation of ulterior motives. “I thought sports was about friendship without political or discrimination involved,” he mentioned, reinforcing the initiative’s sportive over political emphasis. Nevertheless, earlier remarks from the International Olympic Committee described Russia’s efforts as a “cynical attempt” to politicize sports.
