Major League Baseball warned three Christian pitchers for writing a Bible verse on their caps during Pride Night — and now a U.S. senator wants to know if the league plays by different rules depending on whose message is on the hat.
Story Snapshot
- Three San Francisco Giants pitchers wrote a Genesis verse on their caps during a Pride Night game and were warned by MLB for future violations.
- Senator Josh Hawley formally demanded MLB explain whether it enforces uniform rules equally, pointing to the league’s past allowances for progressive messaging.
- MLB says the warning was about writing on a cap — not the religious content — but Hawley is asking for five years of disciplinary records to test that claim.
- Vice President JD Vance and other Republicans have joined the criticism, calling the league’s actions an attack on Christian expression.
Bible Verses on Caps Trigger MLB Warning
During a Pride Night game, San Francisco Giants pitchers Landen Roupp, JT Brubaker, and Ryan Walker wrote “Gen 9:12-16” on their caps. That passage from the Book of Genesis describes the rainbow as a sign of God’s covenant with the earth. MLB issued warnings to all three players, saying the writing violated uniform rules. Brubaker publicly explained his intent, saying the rainbow belongs to God’s promise — not to any political movement.
MLB spokesperson Pat Courtney confirmed the warnings, saying, “The writing on the cap violates our rules and consistent with normal practice we have warned the players about future violations.” The league added that the warning was “not disciplinary” and had “absolutely nothing to do with the content of the message.” MLB’s position is that any writing on a cap breaks the rules — no matter what it says.
Hawley Calls Out a Double Standard
Senator Josh Hawley sent a letter to MLB Commissioner Robert Manfred, saying the league “must answer for what appears to be a pattern of discrimination.” Hawley pointed to 2020, when MLB temporarily suspended its uniform rules to let players write progressive slogans on their caps and gear following George Floyd’s death. His argument is direct: if the league bent its own rules for one set of messages, it has to explain why it enforced them strictly against a Bible verse.
Hawley also asked whether players are required to wear Pride Night gear while religious expression gets restricted. He demanded MLB hand over a full copy of the uniform rule used to warn the Giants pitchers. He also requested a complete log of every warning, fine, or discipline issued to players over the past five years for uniform violations. Those records, if produced, would show whether MLB has applied its rules the same way across the board — or selectively.
The Key Question: Equal Treatment or Double Standard?
MLB’s defense rests on one claim: the rule bans all writing on caps, regardless of content. That is a reasonable defense on its face. But Hawley’s investigation targets something harder to dismiss — whether the league has actually enforced that rule the same way every time. The 2020 exceptions for social justice messaging are a real data point. If MLB allowed political writing then but cracked down on a Scripture reference now, the “content-neutral” argument falls apart.

It is worth noting that the players received only a warning — not a fine or suspension. That limits the immediate harm. But the principle at stake is bigger than one warning. Conservative Americans have watched institutions bend rules for left-leaning causes while tightening them against Christian expression. Hawley’s demand for records puts MLB on notice: show us the full enforcement history, or the double-standard charge will only grow louder. The league now has to either produce the documents or explain why it won’t.
