(PatriotPostNews.com) — Israel has taken control of the Rafah land crossing to prevent bad actors, including Hamas terrorists, from taking advantage.
Roughly 20 children have been evacuated from Gaza to seek urgent medical care. Palestinian hospitals have struggled to maintain medical supplies as a result of the border shutdown. Israel has been resistant to opening any pathways, asserting that the region is not safe for aid workers. The evacuation is one of the first significant evacuations since the Rafah land crossing was shut down. The Rafah crossing was captured and shut down by Israeli forces
Israel captured and shut down a land crossing that had been controlled by Palestine. Egypt denounced the move and shut down its side of the crossing. According to Israeli reports, the port was burned down in a fire, but those reports did not include what started the fire. As a result, the current medical evacuation took a route through Israel, but Israel has suggested the path is not permanent.
As of May 27th, 2024, 21 children have been evacuated. Israel partnered with the United States and Egypt to facilitate the evacuation of medical refugees via the Kerem Shalom land crossing. In total, 70 patients were evacuated. The majority of the children needed cancer treatment. One Palestinian mother said her child was covered with tumors. Many parents were not able to travel with their children.
The World Health Organization (WHO) asserted that thousands of Gazans are in need of immediate medical care. Charities and nonprofits have been working to get medical care to Palestinians, but Israel asserts that the region is too dangerous. Israeli officials released photos allegedly showing murdered members of Doctors Without Borders.
The WHO estimates that 10,000 people need medical evacuation. However, the director of Gaza’s hospitals asserted that at least 25,000 Gazans need to be medically evacuated and said that almost 1,000 children have been prevented from receiving cancer treatment as a result of Israel’s blockades.
