Houston Drug Raid Trial Underway
Former Houston police officer Gerald Goines is on trial for his involvement in the deaths of Dennis Tuttle and Rhogena Nicholas during a 2019 drug raid. Goines, charged with two counts of murder, has pleaded not guilty. Prosecutors argue that Goines lied on the search warrant, falsely portraying the couple as dangerous drug dealers.
During the trial, prosecutor Keaton Forcht presented evidence that Goines had obtained a “no-knock” warrant by claiming an informant bought heroin at the couple’s home. However, authorities only found small amounts of marijuana and cocaine at the residence. The couple and their dog were killed when officers burst into the home and immediately fired their guns.

Defense Claims Misleading Charges
Goines’ attorney, Nicole DeBorde, admits he lied but contends that his actions do not merit a murder conviction. “He didn’t murder anybody. He is not legally responsible for murder,” DeBorde stated. “This is the case of the wrong charges being filed. There are other consequences for him.”
“It’s based on lie after lie after lie,” said Forcht, with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
DeBorde also argued that Dennis Tuttle fired at the officers, wounding four, and that the couple was responsible for their own deaths. The trial has generated significant publicity, leading the defense to question whether Goines can receive a fair trial. If convicted, Goines faces up to life in prison.

Broader Investigations and Reforms
The raid has sparked a broader investigation into systemic corruption within the narcotics squad, resulting in a dozen officers, including Goines, being indicted on other charges, with some charges dismissed. Thousands of cases handled by the narcotics unit are under review, and at least 22 convictions linked to Goines have been overturned.
“But for the actions of Gerald Goines, those two homeowners would still be alive,” Forcht said.
Goines also faces federal charges related to his 2004 drug arrest of George Floyd. Neighbor Sarah Sanchez testified about the incident, mentioning the neighbor Patricia Garcia, who made false 911 calls leading to the raid. Garcia was sentenced in June 2021 for these false claims, and prosecutors presented cellphone videos recorded by Sanchez during the raid, along with HPD Officer Richard Morales’ body camera footage.
