A recent theft of over 9,000 pounds of berries by alleged illegal immigrants has spurred a Florida sheriff to sharply criticize federal border policies.

At a Glance

  • Multiple illegal immigrants were arrested for unlawfully picking thousands of pounds of palmetto berries.
  • Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey criticized Washington, D.C., lawmakers for failing to secure the U.S. border.
  • Eight suspects were arrested, including four illegal immigrants, for stealing $7,300 worth of palmetto berries.
  • Two illegal immigrants were applying for U.S. citizenship and cannot be deported due to pending court dates.

The Incident and Arrests

On Interstate 95, an FWC officer noticed a suspicious U-Haul, leading to a significant bust. Deputies from Brevard County discovered a truck full of more than 9,000 pounds of stolen palmetto berries, valued at over $7,000. The operation ended in the arrest of eight individuals, including four illegal immigrants. Among the arrested, some had been deported previously and had prior felony arrests.

Two of the suspects are currently applying for U.S. citizenship and cannot be deported because they have pending court dates. Additionally, everyone involved in the berry theft was jailed on a $2,500 bond.

Sheriff Ivey’s Criticism of Federal Policies

Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey did not hold back his criticism of federal immigration policies. He emphasized the case’s importance due to the illegal status of the suspects and expressed his frustration with the lack of enforcement of existing immigration laws.

“What a bunch of crap, plain and simple. They violated our nation’s immigration laws to get here in the first place, and then they’re out there committing crimes and victimizing our citizens while trying to gain citizenship themselves,” said Sheriff Ivey.

Ivey’s remarks reflect growing discontent with how nonviolent crimes committed by illegal immigrants are handled. He pointed out that unless they commit a violent felony, these individuals will not be deported despite multiple nonviolent offenses. Legal experts acknowledge that limited resources often prioritize the deportation of violent criminals over nonviolent offenders.

Implications and Legislative Actions

The theft of palmetto berries is not an isolated incident but an example of broader issues related to illegal immigration and border security. Sheriff Ivey has visited the U.S. southern border and witnessed firsthand the impact of illegal immigration on local communities. He criticized Washington, D.C., for not enforcing immigration laws effectively. Ivey urged lawmakers to allow Customs and Border Patrol agents to secure the border or enable local sheriffs to handle it.

Florida recently passed Senate Bill 1718, signed by Governor Ron DeSantis, to counter federal border policies. The law mandates E-Verify for employers with 25 or more employees and imposes penalties on employers who hire illegal aliens. Additionally, local governments are banned from issuing ID cards to illegal aliens, and out-of-state IDs issued to them are invalidated in Florida. Hospitals accepting Medicaid must ask about citizenship status and report this data quarterly, and unauthorized aliens using false ID for employment face felony charges.

“The Biden Border Crisis has wreaked havoc across the United States and has put Americans in danger,” said Governor Ron DeSantis. “In Florida, we will not stand idly by while the federal government abandons its lawful duties to protect our country. The legislation I signed today gives Florida the most ambitious anti-illegal immigration laws in the country, fighting back against reckless federal government policies and ensuring the Florida taxpayers are not footing the bill for illegal immigration.”

This incident in Florida highlights the ongoing debate over immigration enforcement and border security. Communities affected by such crimes continue to call for increased scrutiny and reform to protect American interests and uphold the rule of law.
