(PatriotPostNews.com) – Following rumors and internal reports that a new immigration-related policy was in the works, the Biden administration has enacted a new rule limiting illegal migrants from seeking asylum.
In the past several days, sources with knowledge of the plan confirmed to reporters that President Joe Biden would sign an executive order that allows border officials to turn away illegal migrants seeking asylum if the number of daily crossings at the southern border exceeds 2,500. The order, signed by the Democratic president on Tuesday June 4, invokes section 212 (f) of the Immigration and Nationality Act.
Biden’s action is similar to one from former president Donald Trump, who used the same section of the act to limit border crossings while he was in the White House. The order comes amid ongoing controversy about immigration, which has proven to be a key issue for voters ahead of the 2024 presidential election—set to be a rematch between the sitting Democratic commander-in-chief and the controversial Republican, Donald Trump.
So far, Biden’s notorious “open border” policies have divided voters, some of whom are in favor of welcoming the surge of immigrants and others who point to the rise in criminal activity that has accompanied the willingness to allow thousands of migrants to illegally enter the country.
In a White House fact sheet about the latest immigration-related order, the Biden administration accused Republican lawmakers of prioritizing “partisan politics” instead of “national security.” It also maintained that the president has repeatedly strived to reform immigration policy and fix what has been described as a “broken immigration system.”
Notably, Tuesday’s executive order is “not permanent.” The fact sheet emphasized that the rule “will be discontinued” as soon as the number of migrants coming into the country in between designated entry locations has reduced enough for border officials to “safely and effectively manage” the immigration numbers.
