(PatriotPostNews.com) — Renowned sex therapist Ruth Westheimer, commonly known as Dr. Ruth, passed away at age 96, on Friday, July 12th, 2024. Westheimer is famous for her work as an educator, media personality, sexologist, and therapist. Her aim was to provide easy-to-understand information on the human body and adult relations, but her blunt openness drew strong criticism. Westheimer once said people should be “sexually active until the age of 99.”
Westheimer started her career as an employee at Planned Parenthood, and supported abortion throughout her life. She worked as a director for Planned Parenthood while she completed her doctorate in family and sex counseling at Columbia University. Westheimer made a name for herself in the 1980s with her hit radio talk show called Sexually Speaking. With the success of the show, she published countless articles and eventually published nearly 50 books. She was viewed by her fans as being honest, but not judgmental.
In the fall of 2023, Westheimer was named New York’s first ever “Ambassador of Loneliness” by New York Governor Kathy Hochul.
Westheimer was also a Holocaust survivor. Westheimer’s father was detained by Nazis in 1938 when he was about 10-years-old. Her mother took her to a Jewish orphanage, and Westheimer never saw her parents again. Westheimer attributed her love for education to her father’s love of reading.
In 1945, Ruth moved to Israel and eventually became a Zionist and sniper for the Hafanag, a group that fought for the establishment of the Jewish state of Israel. Westheimer was severely injured after a bomb exploded in close proximity. She lost a portion of her foot, but after a challenging recovery, she was able to resume normal life.
Westheimer had three husbands during her life, but she described the first two as “legalized love affairs.” She met her final husband, Fred Westheimer, in 1961 and described him not as an affair but as “true love.” They remained together until his death in 1997.
