Ah, how nice it would be if everyone just picked up after themselves, but in today’s world, we need drones to clean up our messes even on the highest peak on Earth. Yes, Mount Everest—the pinnacle of human ambition and, apparently, the world’s highest landfill. But don’t fret, China has a tech-savvy solution for this: advanced drones for waste cleanup. Intrigued? Keep reading for the cold, hard facts.
A Problem of Hazardous Proportions
Everest has accumulated waste for decades—140 tons over 70 years, to be exact. This garbage, consisting of discarded oxygen tanks, food wrappers, and other refuse, has not only defaced the mountain but has also posed serious hazards to climbers and especially to local Nepalese guides risking their lives to clean up.
DJI’s Technological Marvels
Enter DJI, the Chinese drone manufacturer, which has successfully completed its first drone delivery tests on Everest. Their FlyCart 30 model transported supplies and returned with waste from Everest’s Base Camp to Camp 1, all at altitudes over 6,000 meters. According to reports, the drone had 43% battery remaining after completing the round trip. You can watch more about this incredible feat here:
The FlyCart 30 demonstrated unprecedented capabilities, hence offering a revolutionary way to improve safety and efficiency on the mountain. And yes, for those who prefer a Tweet-sized update—check this out:

Real Lifesavers
“The drone transported cargo between camps and removed waste left by climbers at altitudes above 6,000 meters.” South China Morning Post
Such operations would otherwise put local guides and Sherpas in life-threatening situations, particularly while crossing the treacherous Khumbu Icefall. Adding high risks from rising temperatures, these drones couldn’t have come at a better time.
Nepal’s Plan for Cleaner Peaks
Come autumn, Nepal plans to deploy these drones to transport garbage from Ama Dablam and then Everest in the spring. Incredibly, these drones can carry up to 500 pounds of waste per hour, an undertaking that would take 14 porters six hours to accomplish. With efficiency and safety as the primary goals, operators will also be providing necessary training to local sherpas.
A Strategic Partnership
DJI also signed a memorandum of understanding with local authorities to formalize this much-needed initiative. The long-term impact on Everest’s ecosystem could be monumental, significantly cutting down on waste and enhancing safety.
To put it bluntly, these high-altitude ‘heavy lifter’ drones, capable of ferrying 33-pound payloads in extreme environmental conditions, promise a cleaner and safer Everest.
Environmental Impact and Global Reach
These drones aren’t just a one-trick pony. They’re also involved in planting saplings, providing aid, conducting research, and installing solar panels globally. However, let’s not gloss over the political backdrop. DJI finds itself in a bit of hot water back home due to allegations about its ties to the Chinese Communist Party. A bipartisan U.S. bill is floating around to restrict their operations, citing security concerns.
Wrapping it Up
So, while U.S. lawmakers are pushing to ban these Chinese drones, let’s see if our friends in Nepal can keep Everest from becoming more of a garbage pit than it already is. Remember, folks, cleanliness might just be next to godliness, even on the world’s highest summit. If nothing else, at least China’s putting its drones to good use—now if only we could get those responsible for the mess to do the same.
