North Korea Furious After Trilateral Denuclearization Summit

(PatriotPostNews.com) – North Korea has responded with fury to a joint summit on denuclearization held by South Korea, China, and Japan.

The communist nation described the meeting as a “grave political provocation” that would hurt rather than help conflict among militaries. South Korea—which hosted the gathering in its capital of Seoul on Monday, May 27—later suggested that the North’s message of frustration was intended most directly for China, the closest ally of North Korea.

President Yoon Suk Yeol of South Korea, Fumio Kishida, the prime minister of Japan, and Li Qiang, China’s premier, gathered earlier this week and stood by their determination to maintain stability and peace throughout the Korean Peninsula.

The same day the summit was held, the Foreign Ministry of North Korea said in a statement that “anyone” who moves to “deny or violate” the country’s “constitutional position” that it is a “nuclear weapons state” will be viewed as imposing “the most serious infringement” of North Korea’s sovereignty.

Additionally, the statement condemned the denuclearization talks at the summit as an intentional “interference” in the country’s “internal affairs.” Should the denuclearization efforts get underway more seriously following the summit, the statement warned, that would inevitably lead to “hastened war.”

The summit did not specifically call on North Korea to shut down its investment in nuclear weapons but did serve to “reiterate positions” related to “regional peace and stability.” The gathering was the first of its kind to occur in over four years.

On Tuesday, immediately following the gathering and North Korea’s incensed response, the Unification Ministry of South Korea—which manages issues between the North and South—hinted at the possibility of the North’s statement taking aim at China. The public criticism of a meeting that included officials from Beijing is “rare,” according to a South Korean official.

The nuclear weapons program in North Korea has not gained explicit support from China even though some have speculated that it aids the North’s communist ally by avoiding economic sanctions.
