Solar Roof Turns Wildfire—City Locks Down

A massive warehouse fire in Los Angeles has burned for six straight days, pumping toxic smoke across the region — and it may have started because of the rooftop solar panels California politicians love to mandate.

Story Snapshot

  • A fire at a cold-storage warehouse in Boyle Heights broke out June 17, 2026, and was still burning six days later.
  • Solar panels on the roof are suspected of starting the blaze — and this was reportedly the second fire at the same facility.
  • Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass both declared states of emergency as toxic smoke spread across Los Angeles County.
  • Shelter-in-place orders were issued, lifted, and then reinstated after hidden fire pockets and a lithium-ion battery ignition were discovered inside the building.

Six-Day Fire Chokes Los Angeles Neighborhood

A massive fire broke out on June 17, 2026, at a 491,000-square-foot cold-storage warehouse in Boyle Heights, a neighborhood in Los Angeles. The building is operated by Lineage Logistics. Flames tore across the solar panels on the roof and spread thick, toxic smoke over a wide area. More than 100 firefighters responded. The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) called it a “very complex” incident with numerous hazards for crews.

The fire kept reigniting for days. Los Angeles County Fire Chief Jon O’Brien said “deep pockets of smoldering fire remain buried under structural debris and solar panels.” Crews had to tear down walls just to reach the hidden hot spots. Drones and a firefighting robot were brought in to help. Water cannons were shipped in from Texas. By day six, the fire was still not fully out.

Solar Panels Suspected — and This Wasn’t the First Time

Lineage Logistics said it believes the fire started while contractors were testing the solar array on the roof. The company blamed the third-party owner of the solar installation. However, as of June 21, no official cause had been confirmed. Investigators had not yet entered the building to assess the ammonia systems and structural damage. Los Angeles police also launched a joint arson investigation, leaving the cause officially open.

This appears to be the second fire at the same facility involving rooftop solar panels. That detail raises serious questions. California’s green energy mandates push solar installations onto commercial buildings across the state. When those systems fail or catch fire, they can make a blaze nearly impossible to fight. The solar panels at this warehouse spread flames “almost like a wildfire,” according to LAFD incident commanders, forcing them to call in water-dropping aircraft.

Toxic Hazards, Emergency Declarations, and Displaced Residents

The fire triggered an ammonia leak inside the building, forcing a six-hour shelter-in-place order for a large section of east Los Angeles. Residents were told to stay indoors, close windows, and turn off air conditioning. The order was lifted Wednesday evening, then reinstated Thursday after crews found a new fire pocket and detected hydrogen fluoride — a toxic gas released when a lithium-ion battery ignites. The building housed about 60 battery-powered forklifts.

Air quality across central Los Angeles County reached “Very Unhealthy” levels. The South Coast Air Quality Management District extended its pollution advisory multiple times. Los Angeles County Health Officer Muntu Davis warned that fine particles in the smoke could irritate the lungs and worsen heart and lung conditions. Residents were urged to wear N95 masks outdoors. Parks, pools, and children’s programs near the fire zone were shut down.

Emergency Declarations and a Looming Biohazard

Mayor Karen Bass declared a local emergency on June 20. Governor Newsom declared a state of emergency for Los Angeles County the same day. The declarations unlocked state resources for firefighting, cleanup, and environmental monitoring. Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda Solis announced plans to seek a county-level emergency declaration as well. Two 24-hour shelter centers opened for displaced residents, and Mayor Bass arranged free Uber rides to get people there.

Beyond the smoke, officials warned of a growing biohazard threat. The warehouse held roughly 85 million pounds of food in cold storage. As the fire burned and power failed, that food began to spoil. Officials raced to manage the rotting inventory while firefighters were still battling the blaze. The LAFD said it remained concerned about the biohazard risk posed by the spoiled food even as air quality slowly improved. No injuries were reported throughout the entire incident.
