His brother, Tyreck Irvin, faces similar charges, while his grandfather, James Graham, is charged with aggravated manslaughter of a child, neglect, and failure to report child abuse.

Mirlande Moltimer Ameda, the owner of the home health care company, stands accused of third-degree murder, aggravated manslaughter of a child, Medicaid fraud, and neglect. Nurse Cassandre Lassegue faces charges of first-degree murder, third-degree murder, aggravated manslaughter of a child, aggravated child abuse, and Medicaid fraud.

The Heartbreaking Details

Deonte Atwell weighed only seven pounds at the time of his death on December 25 and was rushed to Broward Health Medical Center an hour before doctors pronounced him dead. His condition suggested severe malnutrition, with bones protruding through his skin. Emergency services arrived at the family’s Fort Lauderdale home to find Deonte with severe bedsores, indicating prolonged neglect.

“It’s sad to say that Deonte had suffered all the way through his death. It was very disturbing. I can tell you… I lost sleep more than once,” said Fort Lauderdale homicide detective Jacqueline Sanchez.

The young boy, diagnosed at birth with thoracic spina bifida and hydrocephalus, required specialized around-the-clock care that he did not receive. During the investigation, authorities discovered 264 unopened bottles of feeding formula in the home, pointing to a grotesque abandonment of duty by those responsible for his care.

Systemic Issues and Need for Reform

This tragic case underscores the dire necessity for stringent monitoring and accountability in caregiving services. The incident of Deonte Atwell has sparked concerns about the trustworthiness and supervision of those entrusted with the care of vulnerable children. Evidence pointed to an ongoing scheme to defraud Medicaid, estimated to involve between $10,000 and $50,000.

“After a thorough investigation, it was determined that several family members, as well as the home health nurses, did not conduct the appropriate medical services resulting in the aggravated abuse and death of the child,” the news release stated.

The Florida Department of Children and Families has undertaken a review of its records to determine prior interactions with the family, reflecting on the crucial need for oversight in caregiving services and related healthcare providers.
