(PatriotPostNews.com) — The Biden administration is starting to change the United States military over to solar power. The move comes as part of his promise to power the entire federal government with “clean energy.” Five military compounds have agreed to move to solar energy. The United States Department of Defense (DOD) partnered with Duke Energy to convert the installations to solar power.
The five military bases are not being fitted with solar panels. Instead, the bases will receive solar energy exclusively from solar farms in South Carolina. Each farm is capable of producing 135 megawatts. The DOD’s announcement did not include how long the contract will remain in effect.
The green energy contract will cost the government roughly $259 million. The switch to solar is expected to begin in 2026. The contract with Duke Energy is part of the company’s Green Source Advantage program. The program allows large businesses to reduce energy usage from traditional sources. Businesses that opt into the program can get rebates for the amount of solar power used.
The bases being switched over to solar are positioned across North and South Carolina. The bases are Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, Shaw Air Force Base, US Army Fort Liberty, and Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point.
In March 2024, a major grid operator for New England, called the Independent System Operator, sounded the alarm over flaws in solar energy storage systems. The operator suggested that New England winters will damage solar batteries, potentially causing battery malfunctions, including life threatening explosions.
In October 2023, LG was forced to recall five different lines of solar batteries after a house was burned down in Australia. Also in October 2023, a solar system in Germany reduced a home to rubble after a battery exploded. Images show massive, broken chunks of debris tangled with wires and jagged pieces of wood. Solar power experts say it is “impossible” to determine what caused the explosion.
