(PatriotPostNews.com) – Amid the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, the calls to permit attacks on Russia with weapons provided by the West are increasing.
The pressure to allow West-supplied weapons to be used by the Ukrainian military comes as Russia prepares its own soldiers along the border of the two nations, sparking assumption that it will be launching another offensive.
Officials in Ukraine have revealed that there are roughly 10,000 Russian troops gathered within Sumy, a region in the northeast of the embattled country. The potential attack would be devastating if Ukraine is unable to launch strikes across the border, into Russian territory.
In recent days, several Western leaders have expressed their support for the embattled nation using weapons provided by them to defend against the anticipated offensive. Jens Stoltenberg, the secretary general of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), has issued similar calls in solidarity with Ukraine. Government officials from Latvia, Lithuania, Sweden, and Poland have expressed similar sentiments.
On Tuesday May 28, Emmanuel Macron, France’s president, said that Ukraine should specifically be permitted to launch Western-provided weapons into Russia, targeting sites where the Russian military fires missiles into Ukraine. The next day, he joined the German government in granting permission for Ukraine to use weapons provided by France to fire back at the missile sites over the border.
Volodymyr Zelensky, president of Ukraine, recently said that his country should be able to use its arsenal to “destroy” Russian forces “where they are massing.” He added that the ability to use Western weapons would assist in dismantling his opponent’s army, keeping them from being “united” and “accumulat[ing]” at specific areas, knowing Ukraine “will strike” if they do.
While the pressure to increase the use of weapons in Ukraine applies to several Western nations that have such military resources, the call most specifically relates to the United States, which is the primary arms supplier to Ukraine’s military. Though there has been talk of adjusting the mindset, American government leaders have previously requested that Ukraine not fire weapons made by the United States into Russia, citing concerns of an escalated conflict.
